Firefox did It Again – Two Full Pages of Ad in NYT

Firefox Inside

Firefox did it again. This morning, signing into my GMail account, the top most entry in inbox has caught my eyes. This email was sent by SpreadFirefox community, with the subject of “You just made history”.

What’s so great about the email contents? Well, please refer to the following excerpts and you’ll know why.

Hi everyone,

Stop reading this email. Go to your local bookstore. Buy a copy (or ten) of today’s New York Times.

Thanks to your generous contributions, and after six months of hard work by
Chris Messina, Chris Beard, Bart Decrem, Rob Davis and others, Firefox secured its spot in history today as the first ever open source community to take out two full pages in one of the world’s largest newspaper.

Wow! How great. Though I can’t get New York Times here, but still, I could take a look at the advertisement design at this link.

All this while, though good free open source software has been around, but their marketing strategy has been non-existent. Now, with Firefox, something extraordinary has happened. When the first preview release appeared in September 2004, a website called SpreadFirefox, which is dedicated to marketing Firefox, was created.

Recently, Firefox fans were asked to stump up USD 30 each (USD 10 for students) to help buy a full-page advertisement in the New York Times. The organizers hope to receive money from around 2,500 people, with the aim of printing their names in small print alongside the main message about the release. Instead, they saw 10,000 donations, summing up to USD 250,000 in 10 days. Today, the names of 10,000 Firefox enthusiasts are printed in history.

This time, Bill from Microsoft gonna have trouble. Nothing can seem to stop the Firefox from spreading the flame.

In fairness, here in the state's no one really pays attention to those full page ads. Oh, they generate some press attention, but most people will just be annoyed and turn the page. During any election year you have tons of full page ads. It doesn't make much of an impact here, in my humble opinon.
